Boston Summer DREAM Kicks-Off
Five communities, very energetic youth, and A LOT of popsicles, equals a whirlwind of fun Summer Kick-Off events! On June 18th, the Boston Community Intern Team kicked off Summer DREAM, beginning in Orchard Gardens! Starting the summer off with a game of kickball and ice cream seemed like a great way to meet the summer DREAM youth. After playing kickball for a bit, the interns provided a questionnaire for youth to check off possible activities they were interested in doing this summer and any specific trips they wanted to go on as well. Finally, the day ended with our DREAM mentees enjoying popsicles and ice cream sandwiches.
Over the next four days, the team traveled to Madison Park, Somerville, South Boston, and Cambridge to meet more DREAM youth. Other kick-off activities included capture the flag, basketball, and trivia. It was clear after each event that the DREAM Boston youth are very enthusiastic and eager to begin Summer DREAM.
Meeting with the newest community in South Boston, Old Colony, brought an especially excited crowd of over 40 youth! This was by far the largest group of all the kick-off events, requiring several games, many popsicles, and a lot of energy from the Boston crew. When the time came for DREAM to leave, the question “When are you guys coming back?” from some of the youth, affirmed a successful event. The team is very excited to return to the Old Colony, which welcomed them with open arms and enthusiasm from the beginning.
Overall, after getting to know their communities and meeting DREAM youth, the interns have accumulated a long list of activities to plan for the upcoming weeks. Visiting five communities each week, the Boston team is very busy drafting calendars, creating activities and coordinating day trips to local destinations. Boston DREAM looks forward to the weeks ahead that will be full of fun summer trips and activities!
