Javier was born in Venezuela and emigrated to Miami when he was 16. He attended Miami Dade Community College before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill in 2015. While a student at UNC, he served as Student Counsel in the Attorney General staff and participated in the Apples Service Learning program where he taught Spanish to children at Frank Porter Graham Elementary School and volunteered with several other organizations. He also held two research positions collecting oral stories at UNC for the Digital Innovation Lab and the Institution for Study of the Americas. This is his first AmeriCorps Vista year!
